Join ASMS

Association of Salaried Medical Specialists

Who can join ASMS?

If you are a salaried senior doctor or dentist whose role requires you to hold an APC (annual practising certificate) you can join ASMS. If you are not sure, just ask.

Many of our members work in hospitals around the country, but we also cover specialist GPs, dentists and medical officers who work in community settings. You can see all our current collective agreements here.

Since 2023 ASMS has agreed a joint membership option with the Tertiary Education Union (TEU) for senior doctors and dentists who are employed by a New Zealand university but, as part of that employment, do clinical work at a Te Whatu Ora site. You can see the memorandum of understanding about this here.

Subscriptions

Membership costs $1200 per year — you can pay by fortnightly salary deduction, or direct to ASMS if you prefer. ASMS/TEU joint members can only pay by annual invoice which will be pro-rated from the time of joining. The membership period for annual invoice payers is from 1 April to 31 March.

If you are covered by an IEA instead of a collective, or if you earn less than $120,000 per year, we offer reduced membership fees.

If your workplace is not party to a collective agreement, you are only required to pay a half subscription amounting to $600 per membership year.  If you are earning less than $60,000 per annum you will have your subscription calculated at 1% of your salaried earnings, the minimum being $100.00.

The most convenient method of paying your membership subscription is by fortnightly salary deduction (excluding TEU joint membership which is invoice only). If you choose this option we will arrange the setup with your employer’s payroll on your behalf. If you wish to pay annually, an invoice will be sent to you on receipt of your application. You can pay your invoice by internet banking or via credit card online.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need to have received your invoice from us in order to pay online as you will be required to enter your invoice number as a reference. For internet banking payments the ASMS bank account details will be advised on the invoice.

Our membership team can help you if you have questions about our subs.
